Commitment to Environment: As part of the community, we have a personal interest in taking responsible care of our environment. We've worked hard over the past 20 years to improve our environmental standards and reduce emissions. Our industry has long exceeded what was required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - and we remain committed to that goal.
We work closely with the EPA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to ensure our plants are operating safely, for our employees, neighbors and the environment. Working with Houston Regional Monitoring, one of the largest privately sponsored ambient air monitoring networks in the United States, we constantly track emission levels to make sure our plants in East Harris County do not exceed what is mandated by the TCEQ.
Industry in East Harris County spends about $5 billion annually on operating and capital costs related to pollution control and initiating efforts to help further improve the air quality and achieve superior environmental requirements. We're committed to continuing to operate cleaner and greener, complying with regulatory mandates as well as finding solutions to environmental challenges.
While our association is working hard to improve air quality and the environment, we also recognize that mobile sources continue to be a huge factor that impacts our region's air quality. In fact, the millions of cars and other mobile sources on Houston area roads emit more benzene than all of East Harris County's petroleum and petrochemical industry.
Recognizing this concern, we have partnered with the Houston Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) to encourage the public to find and commit to ways that will reduce mobile sources on the road. We support commuting alternatives and finding ways to use energy more efficiently so we reduce emissions wherever possible.
