The East Harris County Manufacturers Association supports programs aimed at educating the community about safety and the values of industry, science and sustainability.
Programs and Initiatives
Wally Wise Guy - Wally is a turtle who knows it's wise to go inside his shell whenever there's danger Wally teams up with an LEPC spokesperson to teach children from kindergarten to fourth grade (and their parents) how to Shelter In Place in case of a chemical emergency. Wally also makes personal appearances at day care centers, parades, sporting events and other civic activities. Click here for more information on Wally.
Science Teacher's Institute - Each summer since 1990, middle school and high school science teachers from across Texas go to the University of Houston to learn about chemicals and the environment. The teachers are sponsored by member companies of Texas Chemical Council and Association of Chemical Industry of Texas, and participate in classroom instruction, assignments and field trips to chemical plants and industrial waste disposal facilities. Environmental Education Workshop - Since 1997, The East Harris County Manufacturers Association has partnered with the Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA), an international non-profit organization of environmental professionals, to provide environmental education workshops on air quality issues to Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers. More than 250 teachers and community members in 10 school districts have participated in 13 workshops conducted over the past three years.
